Muslims in Major Midwestern Cities: Detroit, Chicago, St.Louis, Cedar Rapids

This project explores the contemporary social and political status of the Muslim community in the Midwestern cities -- St. Louis, Cleveland, Chicago, Cedar Rapids, and Detroit. During this century the presence of Muslims and their edifices has grown exponentially. By examining the social and political agenda and cooperation with the majority community we can chart this growth.

We will reexamine the demographic data and up-date it for each city, providing current contact information and internet presence. While exploring each community we will attempt to get data in the following areas:

* the reflections/experiences of the majority communty on the minority Muslim community
* how the Muslim presence has changed the public space -- interreligious dialogues, joint or Muslim initiated community projects: concerning youth, gangs, drugs and violence
* the level of social and political development in the very diverse Muslim community.
