Dr. Tarek Mitri

Dr. Tarek Mitri has served since 2005 as the Lebanese Minister of Culture. He has also served in the Lebanese cabinet as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Environment, and Minister of Administrative Reform. Dr. Mitri was the Coordinator of Interreligious Relations and Dialogue at the World Council of Churches, Geneva, from 1991 to 2005, and Program Secretary for Christian-Muslim dialogue.

From 1982 until 1991, he taught at the Université Saint Joseph in Beirut. Since 1982 he has taught at Balamand University in Lebanon. He occasionally teaches at the University of Geneva and the Institut d'Etudes Politiques in Paris. In 1996, he was Helder Camara Visiting Professor at the Amsterdam Free University. In spring 2003, Dr. Mitri was a Visiting lecturer at the Harvard Divinity School.

Dr. Mitri has published in Arabic, French and English. His main areas of interest are the history and sociology of Christian-Muslim relations, and the modern history and sociology of Christianity in the Arab and Muslim world.

Tarek Mitri studied chemistry and philosophy at the American University of Beirut. He holds a Doctorate in Political Science from the University of Paris.
