History
Muslim immigrants began meeting in the 1930s on South Street in Quincy. In 1962 the community had grown sufficiently to begin building an Islamic center. The Center has been a fixture in suburban Quincy since its completion in 1964.Description
Today, up to 5,000 people participate in the two major feast days, Eid al-Fitr at the end of the month of Ramadan and Eid al-Adha at the time of the annual pilgrimage to Makkah. The membership of the Center is approximately 600, with 75-100 attending regular services. As the oldest Islamic center in New England, it embraces all Islamic traditions: its members hail from 24 nations around the world.Activities and Schedule
The Center has developed a rich program of activities. Prayer is held at 12:45 P.M. on Fridays and at 1:00 P.M. on Sundays. Visitors are welcome but should call in advance. Before prayer on Sundays, the Center holds its educational program, which includes seven levels of instruction to more than 160 registered students. The Center also sponsors public lectures, participates in interfaith regional and national religious organizations, and publishes a quarterly newsletter. Jum'ah Prayer is on Friday at 12:45 P.M. There is also daily Prayer and Saturday night educational gatherings.- Date center founded:
